Port Hedland International Airport PV & BESS

Case Study Context

Port Hedland International Airport (PHIA) engaged Ekistica to conduct a preliminary assessment to explore cost and emissions reduction outcomes for different options for procuring renewable electricity supply. PHIA subsequently engaged Ekistica to undertake further feasibility and development work to pursue a solar photovoltaic (PV) array and battery energy storage system (BESS) constructed on PHIA-owned land

Delivery

Following the initial assessment, Ekistica’s involvement includes:

•Business Case and Initial Feasibility

•Detailed Business Case and Procurement

•Design and Construction Management including Project Management and Technical Advisory

The project has overcome several challenges as one of the first commercial-scale behind-the-meter customer solar and battery systems connecting to the Horizon Power Pilbara Network. The final system is 0.99 MWAC / 1.26 MWDC PV Array and 0.6 MW / 2.69 MWh battery energy storage system which will displace approximately 90% of PHIA’s electricity consumption in the first year of operation.
